Runlimited Hometown Guides: Borough Yards

Running down our favourite spots (and ones we're excited to try) around our brand new home in the arches of Borough Yards.

We’re moving, again. If you’ve been along for the Runlimited ride for a while, I’m guessing you’ll be unsurprised, a little confused, excited, and more, all in equal measure. Turns out that finding a permanent location for a shop in London is a Herculean challenge, but it’s a good thing we have Molly, Jonty, Dougie and the rest of our cast of characters to take on this quest.

Sailing the figurative seas of London like Odessyus, we’ve set ashore on the southern banks of the Thames, in the land of The Borough. Dirty Lane, to be precise, a stones-throw from the famous Borough Market.

Welcome to our new home. We thought we’d show you around some of our favourite spots in the surrounding area.

Runs

What’s the best way to explore an area if not by foot, running? Here are some of our favourite routes from the new shop! Come by, drop your bags with us and head out for a spin. Coffee with us after, naturally.

Southwark Park: 8km

Rotherhithe Bend: 12.5km

Wapping Lap: 8.5km

Marathon Course Long run: 25km

Food

After a nice run and time to chat with us – over a gait analysis, perhaps– you and your travelling party will have worked up quite the appetite. We’d be remiss to gatekeep our tried-and-tested eats in the area.

If you’re in the mood for a bit of pasta, Padella on Southwark Street definitely has you covered. You know you can trust them, since they make fresh pasta in the window for the world to see. Get the Rocket and Mint Salad. Get the Tagliarini with Chili. Get a Bruschetta. Get a dessert. Who cares, go nuts, have fun.

Rambutan: an exotic fruit with a brown, leathery skin and soft, red spines containing a white, translucent flesh that resembles the lychee in taste and texture. Also, the name of a brilliant Sri Lankan restaurant on Stoney Street, literally around the corner from our space. It’s the kind of establishment to which you’d go for an occasion and then realise it’s too good to save just for those rare moments. If whoever pays me can put half of my salary into a tab here every month that would be great, please! (Disclaimer: please don’t actually do this).

We love us some vegan eats at Runlimited. For this, we direct you to Mallow Borough Market. Don’t you get all warm and fuzzy inside when someone says “seasonal produce” to you, and shows you a high-windowed, red-brick building? I do, and then they churn out tasty vegan food and are right next to Runlimited? Say no more.

Surveying the office for some favourites from the area’s locals, we hear The Black Pig has “the best sandwich in the world”. The Piggy has seemingly become a bit of a favourite amongst the food scenesters of Instagram/TikTok, leading to a bit of a queue, but we’re told in some good authority that it’s worth it for satiety and flavour alone, with the added bonus of some snaps for your budding influencer lifestyle. Definitely not vegan.

Berenjak is a Persian ‘straunt sandwiched between the Market and London Bridge station filled with beautiful chandeliers and decor inspired by Iranian townhouses. Kebab, stews, flatbreads, fresh salads, tahdig rice. I’ve never met a kebab I wouldn’t eat and a rice-dish that I refused.

Rustic chic is the name of the game here at Elliot’s. Minimalist furniture and more exposed brick than a builder’s supply yard. Let me give you a chance to guess what they’re about. You got it - natural wines, no reservations, smashing plates of simple food on weekdays and then a roast on sundays. Got it? Yeah, got it.

Coffee

Monmouth is, aside from an Origin Coffee from Runlimited, the place to go for caffeination. Get the olfactory senses on overdrive and take a sniff of the aroma that lingers from the big tubs of roasted coffee beans, then get all hopped up on a strong espresso drink alongside a croissant the size of a small dog.

Also pretty nice is Chapter72. Warm lights and a cozy interior behind a chic black frontage call you in like the sirens tempting sailors onto the rocks, but instead of a shipwreck, you’ll be met with baked goods and “adult” beverages alongside some lovely coffees and teas.

Pubs and Bars

Have you ever thought “I’d love to have a cocktail in a 1940s-post-office themed bar? Well Cahoots Postal Office is your place! If you haven’t had that thought, then Cahoots is still a good spot for a cocktail and quirky vibe.

And we love a pub here, especially for a post-run pint of the good stuff alongside friends. Some of the best (and there are a veritable truckload around us) are The Wheatsheaf (can be bustling and busy!); The Lord Clyde (traditional feel and original signage on the facade); and The Rake (for all you craft-beer heads).

Other Stuff To Do

Want to make a day of it? Here are a few other fun odds and ends around the place that you can build a schedule around.

The Fashion and Textile Museum is conveniently close to Chapter72. As Molly aptly and enthusiastically described her time there: “It was alright!”. Sounds like enough of a recommendation to me!

Clink Prison Museum is a bit more – how shall I say it – grotesque? The collection talks through the history of the penal system, including more gruesome techniques of torture and punishment for those flouting the laws of old-time London. Find out more about the dark side of the history of the South Bank!

Not far away is this massive brick building with a towering chimney stack overlooking the river. It’s a little known gallery, filled with up-and-coming artists, named “Tate”. Probably worth checking out, especially since it’s free.
