The Salomon Aero Glide 4 GRVL is one of those shoes that surprised me in a good way. I liked the Aero Glide 3 GRVL, but this latest version feels like a genuine upgrade even if it seems like the shoe hadn't changed much from the previous model.
The biggest thing I noticed straight away was the ride. The previous version was a good shoe, but it could feel a little firm at times and some of the team felt the toe-rock was a bit strange at faster efforts. The Aero Glide 4 GRVL has a much softer feel underfoot without losing the responsiveness that made the earlier version enjoyable to run in. It strikes a nice balance between comfort and performance, which isn’t always easy to get right but even more in a trail-esque option.
The fit has improved as well. The upper feels more comfortable and secure, and overall the shoe just disappears on your foot. It’s the sort of shoe you can put on and forget about, whether running or spending a few hours on your feet like we do in the shop. The toe box is less tapered and the softer material prevents rubbing.
What I enjoy most about this shoe is how versatile it is. On the road, it feels much closer to a traditional running shoe than a trail shoe. You still get that smooth, responsive feeling that makes daily miles enjoyable. But when you leave the pavement and head onto gravel paths, parks, canal towpaths, or light trails, the extra grip comes into its own. You don’t have to think twice about where you’re running because the shoe can handle pretty much all of it. For London running, it's pretty much going to handle it all bar the depths of the winter mud that you might find in the bigger parklands and forests surrounding the Big Smoke.
If you’re someone who wants one shoe to do everything, this is where the Aero Glide 4 GRVL really shines. It’s comfortable enough for easy runs, cushioned enough for long runs, and responsive enough to handle the occasional workout or steady session, since the weight stacks up on the lighter side of the spectrum of daily-trainers. For most runners, this could easily become the shoe they reach for the majority of the time.
Another thing worth mentioning is the styling. Running shoes are increasingly becoming part of everyday fashion, and the Aero Glide 4 GRVL fits perfectly into that space. It doesn’t just look like a running shoe. It looks like something you’d happily wear all day. It can work for most sTyles, no matter if you’re heading out for a run, or walking around town in casual-wear, meaning it could be a great option for those of you travelling a lot. That crossover between performance and lifestyle is a big part of the appeal.
Overall, the Salomon Aero Glide 4 GRVL is a massive step forward from the previous version. It’s softer, more comfortable, fits better, and remains incredibly versatile. If you want a shoe that can handle your running while also looking good enough to wear everywhere else, this is one that’s well worth considering.
