300m at 5k pace, straight into 100m all out. Six times over.
Let me tell you now: it was TOUGH.
On 16 September, Runlimited x Nike descended on to Paddington Athletics Track, bringing together a mahoosive turnout of runners, all ready to put the new Pegasus Plus 2 through its paces.
The track was buzzing. Faces new and old, runners warming up, conversations filling the space between strides. Some were regulars at the track, while for others this was their very first time. But with six reps of broken 400s ahead, everyone was about to get a proper taste of speed work.
Leading the session was our very own Coach Scott, arriving in a rather groovy Nike tracksuit and looking far too relaxed for what he had planned. The workout? 300m at 5k pace, straight into an all out sprint for the final 100m.
It sounded simple enough on paper. Less so when you’re actually running it. The first 300m was about finding a rhythm, before asking the legs to find another gear for the final 100m, just they were beginning to protest.
Nike was on hand to give everyone the opportunity to test out the new shoe and see how it handled the demands of the session. Fun was had (if you can call a track session fun), 400m PBs were broken, friends were made, sweat was sweated and shoes were tested.
The feedback? The runners seemed to be big fans of the latest rendition of the shoe, each picking up on something a little different. For Abi, who had just completed her first track session in years, the Pegasus Plus 2 was “the perfect tempo shoe.” She found it “bouncy and super comfortable,” adding that it was “more dense than I expected, but that actually added a nice element of stability”.
Lucie described the shoe as “a good surprise!”“It feels like a normal shoe, but as soon as you start running, it’s very bouncy and as soon as I got a bit of speed on them, they were very responsive.”
For Samuel, the shoe brought back a little nostalgia, describing it as “a nice addition to the Pegasus line, bringing back the excitement of the old Pegasus Turbo days.” He also found it “responsive, especially when picking up the pace”.
But what’s different about the Pegasus Plus 2? The new model combines a ZoomX foam midsole with an exposed, curved Air Zoom unit in the forefoot, designed to help create a smooth, propulsive ride. Nike claims the combination deliver at least 18% more energy return than the original Pegasus Plus.
We found the shoe true to size, with a wider toe box offering a more accommodating fit. A big positive in our book, we’re big fans of giving those toes a little room to breathe.
PegPlus 2 is for runners wanting a versatile everyday option that can handle faster paces and sessions.
