It’s early doors on a sunny Sunday in February, and run leaders from across the capital are making their way down the M20, converging on an address on the outskirts of Rye for the first ever Runlimited Run Leaders Retreat.

As we turn off the A-roads, the effects of a tough winter on the countryside lanes are brought fully to bear on our suspensions. Bumpy roads successfully navigated, we are welcomed with generosity and enthusiasm into the home of Michael Doughty, the co-founder of hylo athletics.

Michael is himself a huge supporter of run clubs, independent running retailers, and the power of social running, and he has kindly offered to host us for the day.

FOSTERING CONNECTIONS

After a shared breakfast, we go round the room, with each leader introducing themselves and their club. This first event has brought together a mix of new, growing clubs and well-established names, and it’s a sign of the rapid growth and diversity of London’s running community that, for many of those in attendance, these were first time introductions.

Of course, each club has different ambitions, motivations and challenges, but as each leader talks, it’s clear that what unites them is passion they have for their clubs, and the value of the work they do for their respective communities.

As we move through the day, conversations continue and connections deepen. We check out Michael’s preferred 5k route around local lanes and woodland, experience a revelatory guided breath workshop and rotate through a sauna and ice bath. Nothing quite brings about clarity of thought like a dip in 5 degree water.

It was great to see knowledge being shared throughout the day, and future plans and collaborations being hatched.

Our goal with these retreats is exactly that - to bring clubs together to learn from each other, work together to tackle the big issues, and, where it’s wanted, to increase the visibility, accessibility and reach of clubs via our new Run Hub.

So nice knowing that we are all a bit closer connected now to be able to chat about all things running.

Round two to follow soon.
